Fall Chores

Frosty nights signal time to harvest potatoes. Here Julia is sorting the Yukon Gold from the Nordic Reds.

It took a lot of work last spring to fence and prepare the garden beds but now it will be much easier come planting season with fall pre-planting work complete.

Julia was a bit disappointed we didn’t get a bigger potato crop. Guess I stole a few to many baby potatoes during the summer!

Still harvesting zucchini on October 10.

Two beds tucked in for winter and two to go.

Our vineyard has been expanded to include a row of espalier apple trees. We chose three different varieties to have an early apple (Yellow Transparent) a late eating apple (Goodland) and a good baking apple. It will take a year or two to train the branches of the apple trees to follow the wires but the end result will be a row of grapes and a row of apples that use very little space in our garden.

Julia and I have also been maintaining a community garden plot and we discovered an old crop of asparagus. We decided to transplant them to the house so we have one full bed just dedicated to the delicious spring crop- one of my favorites!?

Yesterday Kathy Schenck called for my help in digging up and transplanting some beautiful deep red peony plants that Ethel and Don had in their backyard for several decades. Kathy is planting some in her yard and sent me home with the rest.

Volunteering to bring dessert to our monthly dinner group gathering meant some quality time spent in Cynthia’s kitchen.
